LEIDEN THE NETHERLANDS – Editing my Leiden material is simply hopeless. This is a picturesque small city about a half-hour’s train ride from Amsterdam. It’s home to the oldest Dutch University and a large, modern medical center that appears to be the largest employer. As was the case yesterday I’m presenting a bunch of images in the hope that I will be able to edit them after the fact.

AMSTERDAM THE NETHERLANDS – Day two in Amsterdam. We spent the morning back at the Rijksmuseum and thence to a park and back to our hotel on the Herrengracht.

AMSTERDAM THE NETHERLANDS – We’ve met up with ten friends from all over Europe who share a common bond: the are (or are married to someone who is) celebrating a major birthday right about now. With a lot of help from Maria we’ve organized ourselves to come here for three of four days to visit the Rijksmuseum , which has been closed for eleven years for renovations, and generally to have fun. Obama was here last week; thank God we weren’t because security rendered this city immobile; his photograph speaking in front of The Night Watch, the most prominent picture in the Rijsmuseum’s collection, was widely published in the US.

Anyway, enough idle chit-chat. The new surroundings have energized me so I’m suffering a bit from shutterrhea. The landscape images today are from the first few hours after my arrival, in the lovely light that inspired Vermeer. The final two images are of our group of friends in the library of the Rijsmuseum.

On this day two years ago (day 896): Dinner at the Four Seasons Restaurant, Mies van der Rohe and Phillip Johnson’s iconic masterpiece.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – We spent today pulling ourselves together for a trip to Amersterdam where a number of friends are getting together to celebrate their birthdays (including mine) which all fall around now. Here’s a picture of a Chinese vase in our apartment.

On this day one year ago (day 1,232): Dinner party for an old friend who was departing from New York for London.
