NEW YORK NEW YORK – Familiar ground today: the Empire State Building. I’ve been following it for years as one of the icons that I fuss with. Of course the challenge is adding anything to the state of the art and mankind’s understand given that there are thousands of iPhone photos taken of it every day (some of them very good).

On this day two years ago (day 1,122): Hay bails. Hay bails were rectangular back when I was a kid. They now have the proportions of soup cans. The march of technology.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – My itinerary today took my through Rockefeller Center twice. There are a lot of tourists here, mostly doing selfies in front of landmarks. It’s hard to imagine capturing an image here that hasn’t been done in precisely the same way many, many time before. But today I’ve tried despite the rain and high, bright sky.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – Spring is arriving. This is a tough time of year to photograph cityscapes around here. The city is flamboyantly in bloom. The street crud from the winter has been completely cleaned up. It’s hard to take a picture that doesn’t look like a cut in a White Flower Farm catalogue. Tedious. The temptation to shoot big flowering trees is irresistible. I’m fight this by sticking with black and white and using selective focus. Here are some tulips from the Park Avenue mall.

On this day four years ago (day 196): Chrysler Building with the UN Secretariat Building in the foreground. This was originally in color – I subsequently did a fairly aggressive black and white conversion, which I like much better.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – On the street (actually Lexington Avenue in the 40s) during the Manhattan golden hour. I’ve been pursuing the Chrysler Building for years. Here it is again. I found myself in Brooklyn this afternoon, at our daughter’s new apartment on Remsen Street. The view from her roof North.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – A pretty mundane iPhone shot out my window. This sort of thing usually doesn’t work – I had to remove some reflections in Photoshop. Later in the day an image in severe back lighting with my Leica Monochrom.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – Home again. I walk everywhere here, combining exercise with a fairly efficient mode of transportation. I caught a classic view of the new World Trade Center handheld with my Leica Monochrom. This may be my favorite image of recent weeks.
