BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS – Dear diary: I had an heretofore unscheduled trip to Boston today. As you may know I’m not at my best on travel days so I’m stuck with “what the hell is this?” images taken on both ends of the trip. Good luck guessing on this one.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – It was too nasty today to venture outside. Have I mentioned that I’m getting tired of winter? So I spent the day in my home office and shot around the house with my Noctilux lens and a close-up attachment on my Leica T. Here are the results.

WARREN CONNECTICUT – Winter continues unabated here, with a remarkable amount of snow. It’s also cold so I started the day shooting inside. Finally venturing out for groceries late in the day I captured a few landscapes.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – A hectic day here. I finally got around to thinking about my daily photo at dinner time, today shooting with my iPhone 6S, which is as capable as the last generation of pocketable cameras. Let’s see if you can guess where this is (one of my favorite modernist icons).

JODHPUR INDIA AND BEYOND – More images from the Umaid Bhawan Palace, our hotel here. According to Wikipedia:

Umaid Bhawan Palace, located at Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India, is one of the world’s largest private residences. A part of the palace is managed by Taj Hotels. Named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of the present owners of the palace, this monument has 347 rooms and serves as the principal residence of the erstwhile Jodhpur royal family.

Umaid Bhawan Palace was called Chittar Palace during its construction due to use of stones commonly known as Chittar in the building. Ground for the foundations of the building was broken on 18 November 1929 by erstwhile Maharaja Umaid Singh and the construction work was completed in 1943.[1] The Palace was built to provide employment to thousands of people during the time of famine.

Later in the day we went on to Mihir Garh, near Jodhpur.

My apologies for the large number of images for the day – I’ve had trouble deciding.

JODHPUR INDIA – I rarely take up bandwidth here on hotels but the Umaid Bhawan Palace here is an exception. This was a truly huge palace, a wing of which is still used as a residence by the Maharaja of Jodhpur. It’s a completely remarkable structure, started in the late 1920s and completed in the 1940s, part over-the-top belle epoch and part deco. But the scale is just breathtaking.

MUMBAI INDIA – We had a day of touring with a so-so guide – one of our few disappointments on this trip. We visited a large, mostly outdoor laundry complex, there laundry is gathered, washed by hand, and returned to the owners under a system much like the one dramatized in the movie “Lunchbox”. Amazing actually. We also visited the Anglican St. Thomas Cathedral which is an ok example of Colonial architecture, but has a remarkable collection of memorials for those who gave their lives in the service of the East India Company and the the Raj. Pictures from both spots below.
