DERUTA ITALY – That’s right. We’ve left Switzerland. This morning we traveled by taxi from Soglia to Linate Airport (Milan’s airport for local Italian flights), rented a car and drove to Umbria, picking up our friend, Nancy Novogrod, at Linate. We stopped in this center of maiolica to buy plates and take pictures (here I’m using my Leica M9 and a 35mm Summilux lens).

BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS – My second day in this ancient Commonweath. I took a walk along the harbor with my Sony Nex-7 and Leica 24mm Summilux but didn’t come up with much. There were a few tired looking pedestrians and C+ light. The second image below proves that I was out there. The best shot of the day may have been in my hotel room – the first image below. Some days it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – More of the same. Two images of sunlight showing up in strange places causing me to take a fresh look at familiar places taken with my Sony NEX=7.

Later in the afternoon a storm passed over creating serious drama out my dining room window. Captured with my Alpa TC, Phase One digital back and 32mm Rodenstock lens.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – This is an interesting time of year light wise. Sunrises and sunsets are much further North than you expect – on Manhattan this means that the sun appears to rise to the North because Manhattan is actually “tilted” 29 degrees to the East. The consequences: sunrises happen where you don’t expect them and sunlight illuminates interior scenes in unexpected ways. I’ll be exploring this phenomenon over the next couple of days. Anyway here’s sunlight in a place in our bedroom where I hadn’t seen it before, shot with my Sony NEX-7 and a 35mm Summilux lens.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I spent the morning at the ICP in my landscape class. It was a review work kind of day – I brought in some proofs of my 11th Avenue project. I spent breaks lurking through the halls of the ICP looking for subjects of interest. Here’s what came out of that not-wildly-successful hunt. Taken with my Leica M9 and Nocitlux, but don’t blame the camera and lens.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I’m approaching the end of three intense months of meetings in my day job. This has been a major distraction from photography (and everything else). As I wind down over the next few weeks I expect to return to a more centered and focused approach to this work. Today I spotted myself on a cylindrical chrome column in a building that I was meeting in. I shot it – of course there was massive distortion. The image is a fish eye in the horizontal dimension and is normal in the vertical dimension. I stretched the horizontal axis in Photoshop to approximate real perspective – at least in the center of the image. Shot with my Leica M9 and the Nocti.

On this day one year ago: Still life. The flowers are from our garden in Connecticut. This was the run-up to a party.
