GASPARILLA ISLAND FLORIDA – I spent the afternoon looking for non-beach, non-bird, non-sunrise, non-sunset images on this barrier island on the west coast of Florida. As noted in a previous post I’m packing my Sony Nex-7 and a variety of Leica lenses. Today I stuck with the 24mm Summilux, which is roughly the equivalent to a 35mm on the Nex-7 – a good all around focal length. This island is a colorful place so I’ve indulged my typical lack of editorial discipline and included three images:

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – So here I am on Park Avenue, lurking with my Nex-7 and 35mm Summilux lens in gorgeous morning light, capturing the run up to St. Valentine’s Day.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I finally go out with my camera (Nex-7 with 24mm Summilux lens) after a full day of meetings. Captured this on Lexington Avenue. Oddly, last year’s picture on this day was taken at night a block away. With film! A brief, not very successful, fling with film.

On this day last year: Park Avenue at night. Note the scratch running most of the length of the photo – something that I commented on extensively last year.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – I equipped my Sony Nex-7 with my Leica 35mm pre asph. Summicron (v.IV), which I’ve previously identified on these pages as the “Bokeh King” (“bokeh” refers to the quality of the out of focus image). I took it to the office on the subway (“riding with the king”) and then walked a bit in really good morning light. The camera is very, very responsive in terms of shutter lag – I was able to catch a person standing on the platform as a train sped by.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – Out on the street on a bright day between meetings with my iPhone. This image has been altered; I took a number of images in rapid succession; I added the shadow to the image of the walking man.

On this day one year ago: snow drifts. This seems odd, now. This winter we haven’t had any real snow since the end of October.

NEW YORK NEW YORK – This was a busy day of Holiday preparations. I took exactly one picture with my iPhone. (This will be a relief for those of you who have tired of endless iPhone galleries.) There was a single moment of magical light as I passed a truck with an amazing paint job. The iPhone does a good job of rendering extreme greens. (It’s less successful with reds.) I percolated the image with the Percolator iPhone app – this may have been a gilding-the-lily kind of mistake. Anyway, here it is:
