On this date five years ago (day 1393 of one photo every day): Cameras. A portion of my camera collection from five years ago. I don’t own any of these cameras today.
MANHATTAN – A major thunder storm turned the usually pedestrian view out my dining room window into magic. I tried to catch a lightning strike but missed them all.

MANHATTAN – I had an active day of walking around Foley Square and the financial district in good urban light with my Sony A7riii and the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM lens. It’s not my style to shoot zooms because they never perform at the same level as the best primes, and they are large and heavy. But this one is good. Corner to corner stitches with the lovely Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 are better, but you can’t reliably stitch in many situations. This lens is a keeper.
I’m running through my inventory of Sony E-mount lenses to decide which are keepers – this one clearly is.

MANHATTAN – I spent the day sorting photo gear.
I’m selling most of my Leica M gear. My work with Sony E-mount cameras during the past four or five months has convinced me that my eyes aren’t fully up to the Leica’s rangefinder manual focus, that the best new native glass for the Sonys is at or very close to Leica standards, and that my black and white conversions of the 42 meg Sony A7riii files can be as good or better than the native black and white 24 meg files from the Leica Monochrom. I’m keeping some favorite Leica lenses (in case Leica comes out with a compelling camera offering in the future) and I’m keeping my lovely double stroke Leica M3 as a film camera.
I often shoot out of our dining room window – the cityscape is a brick wall torture test of lens quality. I spent a good part of the day shooting lens comparisons out the window – I’m also thinning my Sony lens inventory to what I actually like and use. It turns out that that means selling some of the lighter, more compact Sony offerings – all of the best native Sony lenses are large and heavy (with the exception of the lovely 55mm f1.8).

MANHATTAN – My hat inventory needs some help – I loose hats and summer Panama’s get tatty after a few years of use. So . . . I went to JJ Hat Center on lower Fifth Avenue to stock up. Since I don’t do selfies you’ll have to guess at what i bought.
