BOCA GRANDE FLORIDA – We spent today on the beach. Maria could do this all day every day forever. One day is about the limit for a month or so for me. This a long beach – 7 miles or so. I took off walking with my Sony Nex-7 and a 35mm lens. Here are three images from the day. Sunset at the Gasparilla Inn beach:

The Gasparilla range light. These structures are only called light houses when there is an actual house for a tender to live in. The Gulf of Mexico (and the bay behind the island) are shallow here making navigation tricky for large boats. Three frames stitched.

NAPLES FLORIDA – Day two of the conference. There is a little more daylight in the schedule today so I’m carrying my Alpa TC and a 35mm Schneider lens. Toward the evening I found myself on the beach with the Alpa. Did I say that it’s hard to find an interesting photograph on the beach. Well yes and no. True. But – – – In the few minutes of the “golden hour”, which is usually not an hour – more like 20 minutes, it really doesn’t matter what you point your camera at. When the light arrives, stop what you’re doing and shoot whatever is at hand. Even a beach. I have to relearn this periodically. In landscape light is more important than landscape. Anyway here is the golden hour light etching the beach in Naples.

Earlier in the day I spotted a familiar looking steeple and indeed it was the local United Church of Christ (in round terms the Congregational Churches outside of New England), a sure sign that Naples has been colonized by New Englanders.

NAPLES FLORIDA – I flew down here from New York this morning for two days of client board meetings. I managed a long walk on the beach today. Beaches aren’t great for photography (at least when I’m pushing the shutter button) I suspect because they are all similar, if not the same. Here’s a sea bird admiring its shadow, taken with my Panasonic.

A few hours later, a sunset from my hotel room.

On this day one year ago: snow.

CAPRI ITALY – Here we are on the Fourth of July. There used to be fireworks and a big party in the Piazetta on the Fourth of July – the fireworks are alas gone – they were sponsored by a local Jeweler, Alberto y Lina, and the word on the street is they stopped doing it after Lina died.

We spent the day at a different place where large rocks meet the water, Bagna di Tiberio. Don’t let the picture in the link fool you – that isn’t sand that you’re seeing. Anyway this with my Leica M9 and a 50 mm Summicron lens.

Here we are on the funicular that connects marina grande to the piazzetta.

MUSTIQUE – We went on a picnic to Macaroni beach. Here’s an image taken with my Hasselblad H4D-60, followed by a sunset with the same camera. As you have seen from the previous post we were in exactly the same place for lunch on January 26, 2010.
