SAN SEBASTIAN and BILBAO – We started our trek back to New York today, via Bilbao where we visited the Guggenheim and had a fabulous lunch before flying to Madrid.

BIARRITZ – We made the one hour drive here this morning from San Sebastian – a very easy day trip. The weather was overcast and rainy (commonplace here) but we had a lovely lunch at a fish place by the beach. kWe were back in San Sebastian for an early evening stroll through the old town.

NEAR SAN SEBASTIAN – We took long hike today, mostly on a segment of the Camino de Santiago, an ancient round for pilgrims. Lovely weather landscape.

ELCIEGO SPAIN – We drove to this small town on the border between Basque country and the Rioja. It’s the center of a major wine growing region; Marques de Riscal is based here; the winery has built a small hotel using Frank Gehry as the architect; there’s a Michelin one-star restaurant in the hotel. We came for lunch.

GUERNICA SPAIN – We had a long and interesting hike today that led us through the Forest of Oma, a large scale project by an artist named AgustÃn Ibarrola. You’ll get the idea from the pictures below. I’m sticking to my guns on shooting black and white only – you’ll have to take my word that Ibarrola’s tree paintings are colorful.

PALMA MALLORCA – We spent the morning today at the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation. It;s a lovely collection on a splendid site – a bit hard to find but worth the effort.
